Which countertop fits the way you cook

All four are stones we template, fabricate and install ourselves. The right one depends on how hard the kitchen works and how much upkeep you want.

Granite

Quarried stone with flecks and movement no two slabs share. It shrugs off heat and knives and stays good looking for decades once it is sealed.

Quartzite

The look of marble with the toughness of granite. A natural stone that has been pressed and heated underground until it turned harder than glass.

Marble

The classic white kitchen stone. It is softer than the others and etches with lemon or wine, which is why we suggest it for islands, baths and baking stations.

Quartz

Engineered from crushed quartz and resin, so the pattern is consistent and the surface never needs sealing. The easiest stone to live with day to day.

Budget is relative and installed. The slab you pick, the edge profile and the number of cutouts move the final number more than the material does.

Picking a backsplash

Choose the countertop first, then the backsplash. It is the smaller surface, so it should pick up a colour from the stone rather than compete with it.

Ceramic

Light, affordable and easy to cut around outlets. Glazed ceramic subway is the backsplash most kitchens are built around.

Porcelain

Denser than ceramic and close to waterproof, so it also works on shower walls and behind a busy range.

Glass

Bounces light around the room and wipes clean in seconds. Good for small kitchens that need to feel bigger.

Natural stone

Marble, travertine and slate mosaics with real variation from piece to piece. We seal them at install.

Caring for what we install

Every day

Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft cloth. Skip bleach, vinegar and abrasive pads on natural stone.

Sealing

We seal natural stone at install. Granite and quartzite need it again once a year, marble twice. Quartz never does.

Grout lines

Backsplash grout is sealed when the job is done. Wipe splashes behind the range the same day and it stays the colour you chose.
