Quartz Or Granite The Honest Comparison
Countertops Compared
Most homeowners arrive at our showroom thinking they want granite because it sounds premium. By the time they leave, more than half have switched to quartz. Not because we pushed them. Because once you see the two materials side by side, the differences matter more than the names.
This is the honest comparison. Where each material wins, where each falls short, and which kitchens we’d specify for each. No marketing speak from the stone industry. Just what we’ve installed in roughly 400 Metro Atlanta kitchens and bathrooms over the years.

Why The Choice Matters
Countertops are the surface you’ll touch every single day for the next twenty years. They’re also one of the most visible elements in your kitchen and one of the most expensive to replace once installed. Choosing well isn’t about which material sounds fancier. It’s about which one fits how you actually cook, clean, and live.
The instinct to chase prestige usually fades when a homeowner sees what their kitchen actually looks like after six months of use. A scratched-up quartzite that needed resealing twice is a different conversation than a quartz slab that still looks new. The right answer depends on you, not on what’s trendier this season.
Cost (slight edge: quartz)
Quartz and granite overlap heavily by grade. Entry quartz beats entry granite. High-end granite beats high-end quartz. Apples to apples, they’re close.
Maintenance (quartz wins)
Quartz needs no sealing, ever. Granite needs annual or biannual sealing depending on slab porosity. For low-effort kitchens, quartz is the easier call.
Durability (a tie with caveats)
Granite handles heat directly. Quartz can scorch above 300°F. Granite can chip on impact. Quartz resists stains better. Both last 20-plus years.
When Each One Wins
A working comparison based on the kitchens and bathrooms we’ve installed across Marietta, Roswell, Smyrna, and the rest of Metro Atlanta. Use the list as a decision tool, not a prescription.
- Choose quartz if you want zero sealing and zero maintenance over time
- Choose quartz if you have small children or frequently entertain
- Choose quartz if you want consistent patterns and predictable color matching
- Choose quartz if you’re prone to leaving wine, coffee, or citrus spills overnight
- Choose quartz for bathroom vanities where moisture exposure is constant
- Choose granite if you want each slab to feel one of a kind
- Choose granite if you prefer natural variation and don’t mind annual sealing
- Choose granite for outdoor kitchens (quartz fades and warps in direct sun)
- Choose granite if you place hot pans directly on counters (quartz can scorch)
- Choose granite if resale matters and your neighborhood expects natural stone
Note: The marketing photos for quartz are usually retouched to show perfect patterns. The marketing photos for granite are usually a flawless slab that may not exist in the yard. Always see the actual slab in person before signing off. We pull samples or take you to the stone yard.
