Why The Choice Matters

Countertops are the surface you’ll touch every single day for the next twenty years. They’re also one of the most visible elements in your kitchen and one of the most expensive to replace once installed. Choosing well isn’t about which material sounds fancier. It’s about which one fits how you actually cook, clean, and live.

The instinct to chase prestige usually fades when a homeowner sees what their kitchen actually looks like after six months of use. A scratched-up quartzite that needed resealing twice is a different conversation than a quartz slab that still looks new. The right answer depends on you, not on what’s trendier this season.

Quartz and granite overlap heavily by grade. Entry quartz beats entry granite. High-end granite beats high-end quartz. Apples to apples, they’re close.

Maintenance (quartz wins)

Quartz needs no sealing, ever. Granite needs annual or biannual sealing depending on slab porosity. For low-effort kitchens, quartz is the easier call.

Durability (a tie with caveats)

Granite handles heat directly. Quartz can scorch above 300°F. Granite can chip on impact. Quartz resists stains better. Both last 20-plus years.

Correct, never. Quartz is engineered with resin that fills the porosity, so there’s nothing for liquid to soak into. Granite is a natural stone with microscopic pores and needs sealing every 12 to 24 months depending on the slab. That maintenance gap is real, not marketing.

No. Quartz has resin that can scorch or yellow above 300°F. Always use a trivet. Granite handles direct heat without issue, which matters if you’re the kind of cook who pulls cast iron straight from the oven onto the counter.

Completely different material. Quartzite is a natural stone, harder than granite, harder than quartz, and requires sealing like granite. Quartz is an engineered product made from crushed quartz and resin. They’re unrelated despite the similar name, and confusing them is a common showroom mistake.
